Teachers in California started to use AnimalWatch in their math classes this fall and by the end of September, students had completed almost 30,000 word problems. Some students are even logging in to AnimalWatch from home in the evenings and on weekends.
Teachers who are participating in the Efficacy Study directed by WestEd participated in online professional development training sessions over the summer. Sessions were conducted by AnimalWatch project member Jane Strohm on August 10, August 17 and August 24, 2010. Sessions were recorded for later viewing and can be accessed in the Teacher Handbook.
Safatul Islam, graduating senior at St. Gregory College Preparatory School in Tucson, completed a 2.5 week internship with the AnimalWatch project in Spring 2010. He authored three problem sets about mathematics related to food, nutrition and the environment. The new unit was then used in a Grade 6 math class at St. Gregory. Safatul started as a first-year student at The University of Arizona in Fall 2010.
Project graduate student Otilia Barbu and Carole Beal presented their work on the impact of difficult English text on English Learners' math word problem solving in a poster at the May 2010 American Educational Research Association meeting in Denver CO.
An article summarizing the evaluation research on early versions of the AnimalWatch software was published in the March 2010 issue of The Journal of Interactive Online Learning.
Federico Cirett Galan, a graduate student in the Computer Science Department at The University of Arizona, presented his work on educational data mining to compare the math problem solving strategies of English Learners and English Primary students at the special track on Intelligent Tutoring Systems at the 23rd International FLAIRS meeting in May 2010.
